Police: Operations of Bishop Gwajima’s Church Suspended in Accordance with the Law

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – June 2025

The Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police have confirmed the suspension of operations at the church led by Bishop Josephat Gwajima, following formal directives issued by the Office of the Registrar of Religious Organizations.

The Zone’s Police Commander, Jumanne Muliro, stated that the police are tasked with ensuring that all legal instructions from relevant authorities are fully implemented.

Our duty is to ensure that we enforce the law and see to it that what has been directed [by the Registrar's Office] is carried out,” said Commander Muliro.

He emphasized that the suspension is based on lawful orders from the registering authority and that no activities are permitted at the church until proper legal procedures are followed.

Enforcement of the order means halting all activities that were previously taking place. If he wishes to resume operations, he must follow legal procedures, including filing an appeal with the relevant legal bodies,” Muliro added.

This development comes amid ongoing national discussions about the regulation and oversight of religious institutions, with authorities stressing the importance of compliance with established laws and procedures.
