CHADEMA Chairman Tundu Lissu Elected Vice Chairman of Global Democratic Union (IDU)
The Chairman of the opposition party CHADEMA in Tanzania, Advocate Tundu Lissu, has been elected as one of the Vice Chairpersons of the International Democrat Union (IDU), following a series of meetings recently concluded in Brussels, Belgium.
The statement, signed by CHADEMA’s Director of Communications and Publicity Brenda Rupia, further explains that the party was represented at the meeting by Deogratias Munishi, Vice Chairman of the Democracy Union of Africa (DUA) for the East Africa region.
"Mr. Lissu’s unwavering stance in fighting for justice, good governance, and democracy in Tanzania—despite facing dangerous circumstances, including an assassination attempt—was highlighted during the conference and gave delegates from various nations confidence in electing him to this position," Brenda noted.
Delegates emphasized that, given his experience in advocating for true democracy, justice, and freedoms, Mr. Lissu is expected to make a significant contribution to IDU, particularly in addressing the erosion of democratic values and the rise of authoritarian regimes, especially across Africa.
It is important to note that Mr. Tundu Lissu was elected to this prestigious role while currently being held in prison in Tanzania. He is facing two ongoing legal cases comprising four charges in total—one of treason (which is non-bailable and the main reason for his detention) and another of incitement and publishing false information on YouTube. Both cases are underway at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam.
