Tanzania Celebrates 61 Years of the Union
Today, April 26, 2025, Tanzania celebrates 61 years of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, a historic event founded by our founding leaders, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere and Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume.
This union was signed in 1964 with the goal of strengthening unity, peace, and development for the people of both sides of the United Republic.
This year’s national celebrations took place in various locations with great pomp and ceremony.
In Shinyanga Region, citizens participated in community activities such as environmental clean-up and tree planting, promoting environmental conservation as a legacy for future generations.
In his address to the nation, retired Prime Minister Judge Joseph Warioba said:
“Our union is a model to be emulated in Africa. Despite several challenges, we have continued to move forward as one nation. This is the time to preserve and further strengthen this union.”
In her speech, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania emphasized the importance of strengthening national unity, listening to all voices, and ensuring that Tanzania continues to be a country of peace and inclusive development.
